The US Post Office in Coloma, California 95613, is the oldest, continuously operating post offic in California. It predates even San Francisco.

Gold was discovered within sight of here in 1848 and the post office was established in 1849 by Jacob T. Little, operator of the first general store in Coloma. It officially became part of the Post Office Service later in the year.

In 1948, on the 100th Aniversary of the discovery of Gold, the post office issued more than 500,000 first day covers during the festive event.

Located within California's famous Marshall Gold Discovery State Park, the Coloma post office is still today a vital part of the surrounding community. It is a very friendly place where neighbors meet and exchange greetings and discuss the weather in addition to posting letters and picking up mail.

Many residents are desecendants of ancestors who came here in search of Gold nuggets and found instead the beauty and the richness that is the historic Gold Country of California. See: Summer Gold Rush Park events.
